How to measure a wild boar trophy? We explain it step by step.

Certain variables must be taken into account, such as the length and width of the tusks, the perimeter of the gills and their beauty.

Read on and find out how to do it.

When we have all the above aspects measured and calculated, a sum is added up to get the final result. If it exceeds 100 points, it will be a medalable trophy. The type of medal depends on the points as follows:

Bronze medal: from 100 to 104.99 points.
Silver medal: from 105 to 109.99 points.
Gold medal: from 110 points and above.

STEP 1: LENGTH OF THE TUSKS
You have to measure the outer curvature of the tusks from root to tip. Then add the results of the two tusks together and divide by 2 to get the average.

STEP 2: WIDTH OF THE TUSKS
Using a calliper, measure the thickest part of the tusk, always in millimetres (to the nearest tenth of a millimetre). Please note that abnormal outgrowths are not measured. As with the length, the two results are added together and then divided by two to find their average. Finally, multiply this value by 3.

STEP 3: PERIMETER OF THE GRINDERS
This is the measurement of the thickest section of each of them. Abnormal outgrowths are not measured and the tape measure must bridge the notches. In this case an average of both measurements is not obtained, but both measurements are scored separately.

STEP 4: BEAUTY
In this step, the tusks are given a maximum of 2 points, the gullets up to 3 points.

The tusks will be assessed separately, and up to 1 point will be awarded for each if the following characteristics are met:
Dark brown to black colouring on the outside (0.125 points).
Regularity of curvature on the upper side (0,125 points)
Size of the sharp surface (0'125 points)
Sharp points (0'125 points)
Curvature with an arc reaching 157,5º (0'5 points)
Grinders are also assessed separately and may be awarded up to 3 points if they meet the following characteristics:
Curvature with an arc reaching 157.5º (1 point).
Curvature with an arc between 135º and 157.5º (0.5 points)
Colour on the outer surface (0.5 points)

PENALTIES
Your boar trophy could be penalised up to 10 points for the following reasons:

Insufficient sharp surface area of tusks. Each is assessed separately as follows:
Less than 4 centimetres (1 point)
From 4,1 to 5 centimetres (0,5 points)
Difference in length and shape of the tusks (up to 3 points)
Difference in length and shape between the rams (up to 3 points)
Disproportion between rams and tusks (up to 1 point).
Hopefully this step-by-step explanation of how to measure a boar trophy has helped you.

Run and find the tusks of that boar you hunted and see how high your score is!
