Hunting crossbow without a license: what Spanish law says and what you should know

The search for information on unlicensed hunting crossbows has grown significantly in recent years. Part of this curiosity stems from the legal confusion surrounding this type of weapon and the —not always correct— idea that it can be freely used for hunting.

At Young Wild Hunters, we are going to clarify, rigorously and without myths, what a crossbow is, whether it is legal to own one without a license in Spain, and, above all, what can and cannot be done with it according to current regulations.

What is a crossbow and why does it generate so many legal doubts?

A crossbow is a mechanical projectile weapon that fires bolts or arrows using a bow system mounted on a rigid frame. Although its origin is historical, modern models exist today with very high power and great precision.

The problem is that many people mistakenly associate:

  • "It doesn't need a license"

  • "It can be used for hunting"

And they are not the same thing.

Crossbow without a license in Spain: is it legal to own one?

Yes, owning a crossbow is legal in Spain without needing a weapons license, as long as it is a crossbow for sporting or recreational use.

In general terms:

  • Possession is legal

  • Purchase is legal

  • It does not require an E, D, or F license

This places the crossbow in a category similar to other sporting equipment, but with significant limitations on its use.

All of this falls within the current weapons regulations in Spain.

Can you hunt with an unlicensed crossbow?

This is the key point of the article.

No, you cannot legally hunt with a crossbow in Spain, regardless of whether it requires a license for possession.

Main reasons:

  • The crossbow is not considered an authorized hunting weapon

  • It is not included in legal hunting methods

  • Its use for hunting would constitute a serious or very serious infraction

That is:
Not needing a license DOES NOT mean it is legal for hunting.

So, why is there talk of "unlicensed hunting crossbow"?

The keyword unlicensed hunting crossbow exists because:

  • It is permitted for hunting in other countries

  • There is a lot of foreign content on the internet

  • Power is confused with legality

  • The concept of "weapon" is mixed with "hunting method"

In Spain, hunting legislation is regional, but no community currently permits hunting with a crossbow.

Legal uses of a crossbow in Spain

Although it is not valid for hunting, the crossbow can be legally used for:

Sport shooting

  • In private fields

  • Authorized facilities

  • With safe backstops

Controlled recreational use

  • On private land

  • Without risk to third parties

  • Complying with safety regulations

Collecting or historical reenactment

  • Especially with traditional models

Always under a clear premise: responsible and safe use.

Transport and storage of the crossbow

Another important point that often leads to unnecessary sanctions.

Basic recommendations:

  • Transport it unloaded

  • Preferably disassembled or cased

  • Never assembled or ready to fire in public

  • Store it out of reach of minors

Although it does not require a license, it is still a potentially dangerous weapon.

Difference between crossbow, bow, and hunting weapons

It is common to compare the crossbow with the bow, but legally they are not treated the same.

  • The bow may be authorized in some communities for specific modalities

  • The crossbow, no

This is due to:

  • Type of shot

  • Impact energy

  • Difficulty of control in a hunting environment

Therefore, although they may look similar, they do not have the same legal standing.

Risks of using a crossbow for hunting

Beyond the law, there is an ethical and safety issue.

Using a crossbow for hunting implies:

  • Risk of non-lethal injuries

  • Lack of hunting protocols

  • Absence of specific regulation

  • Serious problems in case of inspection

Responsible hunting is based on regulated, effective, and ethical methods, not legal loopholes.

Legal alternatives for hunters in Spain

If you are interested in hunting and the world of shooting:

  • There are legally authorized hunting weapons

  • Regulated and safe modalities

  • Specific technical equipment

This is where specialized hunting stores come in, which not only sell equipment but also advise on complying with the law and practicing ethical and responsible hunting.

Technical clothing, optics, backpacks, or field accessories—like those found in stores such as Young Wild Hunters—are part of real hunting equipment, not unauthorized weapons.

Common misconceptions about unlicensed crossbows

  • Thinking that "unlicensed" means "free use"

  • Relying on foreign information

  • Buying a crossbow for hunting without informing oneself

  • Not differentiating between possession and use

These errors can result in fines, confiscation of the weapon, and even criminal sanctions.
