When does the mid-season begin?

The mid-season is one of the most anticipated times of the year for hunters in Spain. This period, which allows hunting of certain species outside the general season, varies in dates and regulations depending on the autonomous community. Knowing the exact dates and the specific regulations for each region is crucial for hunting legally and responsibly.

In this blog, we offer a complete guide to the start of the mid-season in each autonomous community. From northern regions like Galicia and the Basque Country, to southern regions like Andalusia and Murcia, and including central regions like Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha, here you'll find all the information you need to plan your hunting season.

Mid-season in Andalusia

Rabbit: August 11 - November 24. Rabbit hunting is permitted until December 29. Rabbit hunting is permitted on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Rabbit hunting is permitted every day.

Quail, doves, and corvids: August 22 - September 28, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Hunting is allowed daily in the coastal area of ​​Cádiz from September 1 to September 15.

Burrowing Dogs: August 11th to February 9th on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Additional notes:

  1. Rabbit : Dogs may be used starting August 11. This may be extended until December 15, only on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, on lands where there is regular damage to agricultural land, provided it is expressly authorized in the technical hunting plan. From November 1 to 24, the maximum quota will be three animals per hunter per day.
  2. Pigeons : The pigeons that can be hunted during the mid-season are wood pigeons and wild pigeons.
  3. Aquatic : In accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 581/2001, the possession and use of ammunition containing lead is prohibited during hunting and sport shooting in wetlands.

Mid-season in the Canary Islands

The authorized game species are rabbit, common quail, Barbary partridge, and wild pigeon. Shotgun hunting is prohibited on national holidays, except when these coincide with Thursdays or Sundays.

Rabbit with dog and ferret: August 4 to November 24.

Common quail: First 5 Sundays of shotgun opening.

Mid-season in Cantabria

From August 21 to September 10, 2024, inclusive. During this period, only quail, magpie, crow, and wood pigeon are permitted.

Hunting hours during the mid-season are from 6:45 a.m. to 9:15 p.m. Within the different hunting periods for each species and/or type, hunting is only permitted on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and national or regional holidays.

Mid-season in Catalonia

Hunting during the mid-season may only be carried out in special hunting reserves approved by the PTGC.

Hunting days for quail, wood pigeon, heron, and common starling: August 25 and September 1, 8, and 15, except for the Lleida area and the Cerdanya and Solsonès regions, where hunting days are Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays between August 21 and September 10, inclusive.

The hunting days for wild pigeons , including domestic and hybrid varieties, are: September 1 and 8, except in the Lleida region and the Cerdanya and Solsonès regions, when they are Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in the period between September 1 and 10, both inclusive.

Mid-season in Galicia

Quail: August 24th and September 15th, Saturdays and Sundays, caught on the fly or in person. Requires express authorization from the head of the territorial body responsible for nature conservation at the Ourense Department of Environment, Territory, and Housing.

Mid-season in the Balearic Islands

The Order maintains the moratorium on hunting the European turtle dove for another season, and two species of duck (the pintail and the tufted duck) are banned due to the decline of these populations both at the European and local levels. Furthermore, hunting the collared dove will not be permitted this year, as it is not considered a game species in Spain.

Rabbit: Hunting with a shotgun, bow, or falconry birds is permitted, without dogs or aids, starting June 23rd. Traditional hunting with Ibizan hounds is permitted starting June 25th. Rabbit hunting is permitted until December 1st and may be extended until December 29th with the authorization of the hunting ground owner.

Hare: Hunting hares with a shotgun will be permitted only on August 18 and 25, with a maximum catch of one hare per hunter per day. Additionally, if any breed of hunting dog accidentally captures a hare, the hunter will be allowed to take it.

Mid-season in La Rioja

The hunting season will begin in the region on August 15, with the opening of the mid-season, which can be carried out on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays and will last until September 6 for all authorized species except the wood pigeon , whose period begins on August 20.

Mid-season in Navarra

Quail: In the Southern Zone, from August 15 to September 15, 2024, on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and national, regional, or local holidays, within the areas established in the Hunting Management Plans.

In the Northern Zone, from August 15 to September 15, 2024, on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and national, regional, or local holidays, on all fenced land, always outside of wooded areas.

Wood Pigeon: From August 22 to September 15, 2024, on Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and national, regional, or local holidays. In the hunting grounds of the Southern Zone, only for quail-flying and from a post.

In the hunting grounds of the Northern Zone, only by jumping, always outside of wooded areas.

Mid-season in the Basque Country

Hunting will be open every day of the week from August 25th to September 22nd , inclusive. During this period, the species eligible for hunting are quail, wood pigeons, rock pigeons, magpies, and carrion crows . There will be a quota of 10 quails and 4 pigeons, while corvids may be shot without a quota.

Mid-season in Aragon

Quail: August 15 to the third Sunday in September. Maximum quota: 30 specimens per hunter per day. 2.

Wood Pigeon and Magpie: from August 21 to the third Sunday in September. 3.

Mallard in specific municipalities: August 15 to the third Sunday in September.

Wild pigeon and its different breeds and varieties: September 1st to the third Sunday in September.

Mid-season in Castilla La Mancha

The mid-season will begin on August 20 and end on September 15, allowing hunting of quail, wood pigeons, and magpies (until September 21). More details by province HERE .

Mid-season in Castile and León

From August 15th to the third Sunday in September, the following species may be hunted: quail, magpie, crow, rabbit and fox .

From August 25th to the third Sunday in September, the following species may also be hunted: wood pigeon and rock pigeon .

Mid-season in the Valencian Community

In general terms, hunting will be allowed on August 21, with zero hunting for the European turtle dove, the stock dove, the garganey, and the jackdaw. The hunting season for summer migratory birds from fixed locations will begin on Wednesday, August 21, and end on September 15, 2024.

Mid-season in Extremadura

The mid-season begins on August 15 and ends on September 8, 2024 ( quail, mallard, common starling, jackdaw, magpie, and fox ); wood pigeons and rock pigeons are allowed from August 22 to September 8.
